Cineteca di Bologna

2023 Branding

Cineteca di Bologna preserves and restores Italian film heritage, ensuring its accessibility today and its transmission to future generations. At the same time, it actively promotes cultural initiatives and supports the creation and dissemination of young cinema. This branding project was born from the need to provide the foundation with a cohesive and impactful visual identity that reflects both its rich historical legacy and its forward-thinking approach to innovation.

As part of this initiative, I also created a new visual identity for Il Cinema Ritrovato, the most renowned film festival organized by Cineteca, held every summer in the heart of Bologna. Celebrating the rediscovery of cinematic treasures, the festival showcases restored classics, rare archival prints, and forgotten masterpieces from across the globe. With open-air screenings in the iconic Piazza Maggiore and events in historic venues, it offers an unforgettable experience that bridges the past and present of cinema.

I also ideated a brand campaign with bold visuals and controversial quotes from iconic movies. The purpose is to provoke the audience and spark curiosity by pairing controversial statements made by beloved protagonists with an invitation to ‘take it up with them’ at the Cineteca.  By leveraging surprise, irritation, and curiosity, the campaign transforms classic cinema into a platform for dialogue, positioning the Cineteca as a space for cultural exchange and critical reflection.
The new visual identity for Il Cinema Ritrovato aimed to refresh the festival’s communication and engage a younger audience, breaking the stereotype that great cinema is confined to black-and-white auteur films. The identity combines bold, experimental typography with an "analogic vibe," reminiscent of ink for its dynamic and tactile quality, and vivid colors that reflect the event's energy and vibrancy. This approach transforms Il Cinema Ritrovato into a living celebration of cinema, seamlessly connecting the timeless beauty of its past with the vitality of the present, making it relevant and appealing to a new generation of film enthusiasts.
