Chiara Barberi

I’m a Communication & Graphic Designer exploring design as a cultural and political practice. My work draws on experiences across diverse fields, including photojournalism, classical studies, art and sociology. I focus on translating complexity into clear visual communication where meaning comes before form.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Communication Design from Politecnico di Milano. In 2024, I spent an Erasmus semester at Media University, in Berlin, where I further refined my practice.
Il Bugiardino
2023–24  Editorial

Il Bugiardino is an independent, pocket-sized zine inspired by the format of a pharmaceutical leaflet. Each issue unfolds from a single folded sheet (32 pages, 7 folds, 4 articles, and a poster) and explores architecture through one key word, using an interdisciplinary and colloquial approach. Square brackets within the printed text link to in-depth content on Instagram, making the digital platform an extension of the publication and a space for events and community engagement.

As part of the graphic team, I contributed to the evolution of the magazine’s visual identity across both print and digital platforms. I was involved in the art direction and editorial design of the issue Smontabile, collaborating on the development of its visual narrative and modular layout system. The challenge was to visually convey the concept of something “disassemblable” without making the publication physically detachable, while preserving clarity and readability. We translated this idea into a flexible yet structured design approach that suggests fragmentation while maintaining coherence.

Another key focus of my work was the restructuring of the magazine’s Instagram presence. Although rich in content, the account lacked visual consistency and organizational clarity. Together with the team, we introduced recurring weekly formats and developed recognizable visual templates, creating a more cohesive and navigable digital system aligned with the magazine’s identity.

We also expanded the project beyond print through initiatives such as Il Bugiardino x Doner Club and La Scatolina, a curated box set collecting the first four issues.
